Species or groups of whales (or toothed whales / dolphin-type whales) that are known or suspected to occur in Maui's shallow channels.
Humpback Whale
Very HighDominant species in Maui's whale season. These whales migrate to Hawaii in winter to breed, give birth, and nurse. Humpbacks are known for their acrobatic breaches and haunting songs, making them the star of any whale watching tour.
Short-finned Pilot Whale
OccasionalThese are technically part of the dolphin family (but still "whales"). They are more often found in deeper water or offshore regions, making encounters a special treat for lucky visitors.
False Killer Whale
UncommonSightings are uncommon but have been documented around Maui and between islands. Despite the name, they are not closely related to killer whales.
Melon-headed Whale
RareRarely seen because these favor deep offshore ocean waters rather than the shallower reefs and channels where tours typically operate.
Minke Whale
RareEight species of baleen whales have been observed in Hawaii waters (not necessarily Maui). Many are only occasional visitors to the Hawaiian archipelago.
